WRITING WORKSHOP
Linking to a Thematic
Unit of Frozen Worlds
Students in writing
workshop are working on a web related to their thematic unit of frozen
worlds, a them connected to the Jason
Project, a national program that provides teachers supporting
materials and also links them to actual scientists conducing investigations
via satellite broadcasts on a TV channel. The teacher is using
this theme to link across subjects -- social studies, math, reading,
writing, science, and math. Note the differing levels of sophisitication
of the webs developed by students. In this workshop format, each
student can be challenged at their own level of ability working
with together as a total class.
The teacher typically begins such a workshop
time with a mini-lesson on needed skills for the total class,
discussion of the project. While students work independently,
in pairs, or small groups, based on the task at hand and their
interest, the teacher is able to individually conference with
students, draw one or more students together for mini-lessons
specific to their needs, and monitor progress of all the students.
At the end, students will come back together to share and discuss
their work.
